Description
Al Bithnah Fort is a historical landmark in the United Arab Emirates, located near the village of Bithnah in Fujairah. Here's a description for you:
History and Significance:
Built sometime between 1745 and 1800, the fort played a crucial role in the region's history, particularly in the emergence of Fujairah as an independent emirate. It replaced an even older fortification dating back to the Iron Age.
Structure:
Made from local materials like stone, coral, and mudbrick, the fort has a rectangular shape with two round corner towers. An interesting feature is a rectangular guard's room that looks like a third tower from a distance. The fort has a central courtyard and upper floors accessible by a narrow corridor.
Strategic Location: Situated in Wadi Ham, the fort's position allowed it to control the passage through the wadi, a key route connecting the desert interior to the Fujairah coast. This strategic location made it a vital defense point.
Current Status:
Today, the fort is a well-maintained historical site open to visitors. The Department of Heritage and Antiquities has renovated the fort, making it accessible for exploration.
